Halloween Movie Madness
Top Ten Movies that you should watch for Halloween!

October 3, 2019
It’s October, or as I like to call it, Movie Month! As the summer heat begins to cool, there is a sense of eeriness in the breeze. It’s that time of the year again, and that means more movies! You may wonder, however, what are the movies that add that special touch to Halloween. Well, that is exactly what I will be presenting to you today, my friend! Here are the top ten kid and family friendly movies that you should watch for Halloween!
- Hocus Pocus: After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz)
explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
- The Nightmare Before Christmas: The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington,
Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life — he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.
- Monster House: No adults believe three youths’ (Mitchel Musso, Spencer
Locke, Sam Lerner) assertion that a neighboring residence is a living creature that means them harm. With Halloween approaching, the trio must find a way to destroy the structure before innocent trick-or-treaters meet ghastly ends.
- Casper: Casper (voiced by Malachi Pearson) is a kind young ghost who peacefully haunts a mansion in Maine.
When specialist James Harvey (Bill Pullman) arrives to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits, he brings along his teenage daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci). Casper quickly falls in love with Kat, but their budding relationship is complicated not only by his transparent state, but also by his troublemaking apparition uncles and their mischievous antics.
- Beetlejuice: After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die
in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.
- It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! : Charlie Brown is excited to be invited to his first ever party, Violet’s Halloween party. Before the party, the Peanuts gang plan to go trick or treating, with Snoopy, who is dressed as the WWI flying ace, taking his Halloween persona to an extreme. The one person who won’t be joining them for the trick or treating or the party is Linus, who will be waiting in his local pumpkin patch for the arrival of the
Great Pumpkin. Linus believes that the Great Pumpkin rises out of the most sincere pumpkin patch – none more sincere than his own local one – flies into the air, and delivers presents to all the boys and girls around the world. Because of his belief, Linus is the laughing stock among his friends. Sally is torn between going trick or treating for the first time and attending Violet’s sure fire fun Halloween party, or following her love Linus and waiting for the Great Pumpkin’s arrival with him.
- The Addams Family (original) : Morticia and Gomez Addams head a perplexingly macabre family whose
members include a giant named Lurch, who acts as doorman, a disembodied hand named Thing, not-quite-right son Pugsley and morose daughter Wednesday.
- Corpse Bride : Victor (Johnny Depp) and Victoria’s (Emily Watson) families have arranged their marriage. Though they like each other, Victor is nervous about the ceremony.
While he’s in a forest practicing his lines for the wedding, a tree branch becomes a hand that drags him to the land of the dead. It belongs to Emily, who was murdered after eloping with her love and wants to marry Victor. Victor must get back aboveground before Victoria marries the villainous Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant).
- Frankenweenie : Young Victor Frankenstein (Charlie Tahan) is a science nerd and outsider at school, but he does have one good friend: his dog, Sparky.
But then, tragedy strikes, and Sparky shuffles off this mortal coil. Victor is heartbroken, but his science teacher (Martin Landau) gives him an idea of how to jolt old Sparky back to life. The experiment is successful, and all goes well, until Victor’s fellow students steal his secret and use it to resurrect other dead animals — with monstrous consequences.
- Coraline : While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers
a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life.
These top ten movies are great for a movie night with family. They’re not too scary, and they still provide a good Halloween experience for everyone! What was your favorite out of these top ten? If you haven’t seen some of these, try watching them and see what you think! Have a fang-tastic Halloween!

I agree very much with Hocus Pocus as #1. I don’t feel like Addams Family is really a Halloween movie, but more of a comedy of an odd family. You did a good job Marley!

Beetlejuice and Coraline are definitely good movies for a creepy night like Halloween. Beetlejuice is humorous/creepy 80’s classic which is good for the family. Coraline is a good creepy animated movie that will send shivers up your spine…

For me, definitely Beetlejuice. It is a great Halloween movie to watch. the thing I love about it is that it is a classic 80’s movie with lots of action and humor!
