Derrick and Courtney Gann took a leap of faith in the summer of 2021 and opened Lafayette’s favorite coffee shop, SheBrews Coffee. Since then, SheBrews has not only been serving up amazing coffee drinks to the community, but they have also united a town over a good cup of jo and provided a beautiful space to relax, spend time together, or even grab a quick pick-me-up before or after a long day of work.

Courtney graciously took the time to speak with 6th grader, Shyla Goodchild, about this new venture she and her husband have started.

SHYLA: Who came up with the name She Brews?

COURTNEY: I did because I wanted something that put the Lord’s name out there without being too over-faced. It’s a Bible from Hebrews 11:1.

SHYLA: What gave you the idea to open a coffee shop?

COURTNEY: I’ve always dreamed of opening up a coffee shop. I have been drinking coffee since I was like 5, and my husband started drinking coffee when we got married. We made coffee together at home all the time, and I just thought it’d be fun if we bring everyone together for a little hangout!

SHYLA: What is your favorite drink?

COURTNEY: It’s different at different times of the day. In the morning, I like black coffee with plain cream. When I get to work, I like to drink a latte with cinnamon, honey, and oat milk. Sometimes in the afternoon, I like an iced coffee with blackberry and honey.

Check out these new holiday cup sleeves!

SHYLA: Who comes up with the names of your holiday drinks?

A: I do that, too! You know, I was a teacher for a long time, so I wanted to do something fun. I like to pull the names from movies.

SHYLA: How did you get the inspiration for the interior of She Brews?

COURTNEY: I went to several small and local coffee shops, even Starbucks. I feel like they look really modern and I wanted something that was hipster or mid-century.

SHYLA: Do you hope to expand the business in the future. If so, which town would you look to put your next shop in?

COURTNEY: I want a second one in Lafayette, so our goal is to keep

this coffee shop and then add a drive-thru location somewhere maybe between here and Westmoreland. I don’t know. We might go outside of Lafayette, but I really want to have two in Lafayette.

SHYLA: Has the foot traffic exceeded expectations?

COURTNEY: Absolutely, yes! It’s crazy and so cool. Sometimes when there are events, we have 50-100 people in this small building.

SHYLA: Since adding your rewards program, have your monthly sales increased?

COURTNEY: They really have. I don’t know if it’s due to the loyalty program or people just finding out about us. Well, your parents come every day because they know if they keep doing what they are doing, they are going to earn a free drink. I think that people think that they’re getting something out of it, too. It’s also a way of us giving back to our customers for staying with us.

If you haven’t stopped by SheBrews yet, you should pay them a visit over this Christmas holiday and have a cup of cheer from their new Christmas drink menu. Derrick, Courtney, and their wonderful staff work so hard and deserve all of our support to keep this small town, small business dream alive!
